According to the ancient testimonies, the first inhabitants of Serifos were the Eolians and later on colonies from Athens arrived on the island. Mining of iron and copper were the 'key tasks' of the island and they date at the Protocicladic era. According to mythology, at Serifos arrived a box in which the king of Argos had closed his daughter Danae with her young son, Perseus, in order to hide them. Perseus was later mandated by the king of Serifos, Polydektis to bring the head of Medusa, -the siren who petrified those who looked at her. Perseus managed to do it with the help of the gods and returned to Serifos. Meanwhile, Polydektis had tried to rape Danae. To take revenge, Perseus showed the head of Medusa to the king who became stone. From ancient remains we know that the inhabitants used to worship Perseus. |
